About My Art
My art is about conveying mood, emotion, time and place through the application of colour. Colour is very important to me and can, I think, lift and transport a person to a different place, by association, (think, lavender fields, bluebell woods, Cornish seas, exotic beaches etc.)
I also have a fascination for old buildings and peeling paintwork and often work from my many photo's taken over many years of visits to European cities and faraway countries.
Most of my work is abstract or expressionist, I believe that a work of this nature has more of the artist in the content than a realistically executed work, although skilfully arrived at.
My work has been influenced by Bonnard, Van Gogh and Howard Hodgkins and visits to many exhibitions over the last five years.
I paint with oil and a painting medium such as linseed oil which allows movement of the paint for longer and often using a palette Knife, wide brush or rags to apply the paint then often taking off layers until I achieve the effect I want. Often I will apply gesso to the canvas to give a textured finish.
