Carol Ellis
Artist's Biography

I live at West cliff on sea, near the coast of Southend in Essex, and have been painting for about 6 years, initially inspired by extremely artistic fellow family members.
Without any formal art qualifications, I am totally self taught developing styles and techniques of my own, after reading about the very basic skills in books.
As I have always worked full time, the idea of formal training has never appealed. I feel art should be expressed freely and does not always need a structured approach of when and how.
Favourite topics have included local seascapes of my own area such as Evening at West cliff , Chalkwell, and Thames Fishing.
I have also worked from photos taken on holiday of favourite places.
More recently, I have moved from traditional to contemporary styles to develop my skills in other areas. Hence the interest in the close up pictures of flowers and fruit still life.
Initially, I learnt to paint in acrylics, but now water mixable oils are more frequently used. In fact, I enjoy using both mediums in the same painting.
I have exhibited my work locally at our library, and the towngate theatre in Basildon, organised by my employers.
Constantly I am learning new techniques of painting and have started some recent figurative work.
Now Iam experimenting with textures, mixed media and colours in abstracts.
