Interview with the artist

When did you first start?
First started as a child doing painting and drawing games and projects, my Mum gave me to do. But really got to grips in 2004, travelling the Highlands and Islands in a motorhome and painting everyday.

What is the first artwork you ever sold?
The first painting I sold, since opening my gallery in 2004, was Driftwood, Seaweed and Shells. Pen and watercolour wash. I was really excited.

Do you have a favourite amongst your own artwork?
I like the Red Cuillin, first painting I did, after visiting Skye on a back- packing holiday. It echoes the emotions and colours, and typical of the landscape in the wilds of the mountains and lochs. First painting I got publiched in the 'Paint' magazine for the SAA, Society for All Artists.

What is your favourite media and why?
I love acrylic, introduced to me on my degree in 1989. I love it, it mixes with water, can be used very translucent and watery and has very strong colours. I find it similar to pastel and watercolour, can be layered and dries quickly while painting with it.

If you could pick just three colours to work with what would they be?
Alizarin Crimson, good for colours and textures in rocks. Ultramarine, great for bold blues, can be used strong or weak. and Quinacridone Gold mixes well or used on its own.

How long does it usually take you to complete an artwork?
6-12 hours, the more detail and fiddly the better, developed the patience to paint and watch it grow.

Who or what has been the most influential factor in your development?
I think meeting my present partner, Paul. He has taken me to places I could never imagined in the wild walked and observed during all seasons. Found hidden corners of wild flowers, such as fern and primroses by a river, seen butterflies by the canal and birds so close up. thought they were all little brown specks.

Which is your favourite art gallery and why?
Mine, Island Arts. I love to dress it up with new paintings and have fun adding exciting new cards and crafts, I make.

What do you like best about being an artist?
I love to see a painting grow and develop to how I want it to go and imagine it, then, when it is finished, download it on the computer, seeing it on the screen, makes it look something special.

Which artist, past or present, would you like to study under or collaborate with
David Bellamy, love his soft watercolours while Painting in the Wild.
