Bill Hazlehurst
Artist's Biography

I was born in Hockley, Birmingham's jewellery quarter in 1936. Went to Summer Lane Secondary Modern School. There I was fortunate to have a good art teacher who taught me the basics of painting. Because I lived in the jewellery quarter it was the norm to also attend Vittoria Street Art School, here we were taught the trades of the area. I spent a couple of days aweek learning silversmithing and tool making. On leaving school, went into metal engraving and die-sinking. Went back to Vittoria Steet to learn hand engraving.
At 19 made a decision to change course and became an instrument mechanic on accounting machines, where I remained for 34 years, finishing as a "Computer Engineering Team Leader". During those years kept up with my love of drawing and painting. During 1986 I had an accident, being at home for quite a while started sketching in pen and ink, found that these were saleable, as they were of the local area.
A publisher made an approach and together over the next few years published five books. Sketches of Hales Owen books I, II and III. Sketches of Birmingham and Sketches of Bromsgove.
After my accident I retired two years later from computers and opened a framing gallery, selling my own work as well as other's. It was open just over ten years until I finally retired, although I still work from home.
Since my illness in January 2006, I have curtailed my activities. I no longer instruct at local art classes and have cut down my displays at my local library.
As regard my painting, I now work mostly from photographs taken over a number years. Still do a a little pencil sketching outside, but not to distant from my car as I can not walk far.
