Swanage Bay viewed at low tide from the entrance to the Pier, looking across the bay towards the beach and promenade. In the foreground, a stone groyne juts into the sea, protecting the beach beside the pier from erosion. Just beyond, a stone quay rises out of the water and a small boat lies anchored in the shallows. Along the sandy shoreline, the beach is divided by wooden groynes and a large stone jetty. A group of beach huts rise in tiers above the shore road that runs beside the promenade, and a motor coach heads away from the town towards Studland and the ferry to Poole. The patchwork of fields on the rolling Purbeck Hills provides a suitable backdrop to this picturesque seaside scene.
