SUBJECT: Inspired by a visit to the Essex Cottage at Godshill on the Isle of Wight, this interior depicts a scene from the early 19th century when a group of friends gathered together to hold a celebratory dinner party. Essex Cottage is thought to have been named in the late 16th century after Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, who had connections with the cottage. Queen Victoria and her daughter reputedly visited the Essex Cottage tea rooms which were the first in Godshill. In recent times, the roof has been re-thatched and is well known for its kangaroo “final” on the top ridge.
