About My Art

I draw and paint many subjects and animals have been the main subject matter for most of my career up to now. I have always enjoyed life drawing and like to find 'beauty' in the most ordinary subjects. I take great pleasure in searching beyond the physical appearance and try to express the mood as well as the character. Painting a portrait is so much more than achieving a likeness, the correct skin tone or colouring are very important to me but unless the portrait speaks to the viewer, it won't work.
My preferred medium is soft pastel which I find is perfect for my paintings. I particularly enjoy it's immediacy and vibrancy. The finish of pastel gives an extremely life-like effect which is excellent for depicting fur, flesh or feathers. By contrast, shiny metal, water or stonework can all be portrayed effectively using the versatility of this wonderful medium.
I also enjoy working in acrylics and love painting the local scenery and wonderful sunsets in the area. The process of painting in acrylic is so different than pastel work and with each new project, I am learning more and more about this exciting medium.
In 2008 I began producing paintings for Artko, an art company based in Cheshire who supply prints to many retail businesses. This has resulted in my work being displayed in galleries and outlets all over the UK. Although I am producing work in several styles, the most popular prints are of fictional seaside and countryside scenes with a quirky edge in a soft colour palette and are very recognisable.
