John Costella
Artist's Biography

(Updated 10/01/09)
Having painted in both watercolour and acrylic for many years, at the same time studying scores of artists both past and present, I attempt to capture form and style which I can then incorporate into my own work. In tandem with my artwork I also write journals and incorporate pen & ink sketches to provide an artistic passage to compliment my written works, 'The Four Seasons of Venice - 12 Historical Walking Tours' being a 450 page historic journey of the Ventian archipelago which was published in May 2008 and can be purchased on www.authorhouse.com in both hard and soft covers. My second book is due to be published in early 2010, titled From Battersea to the Tower and will include over 50 pen and ink sketches taken along the Thames Path.
The range and scope of my work varies from 'romantic watercolours' to dynamic 'pop-art', as I paint what I feel and see 'at the moment'.
This flexibility of style allows me to balance my work between vivid dynamic colours and the more softer sensitive tonal values which best suit each composition.
In more recent years I have delighted in sketching and painting outside on location whenever and wherever I can, especially in Venice ( as mentioned above) which I usually visit at least every two months. Having travelled to this beautiful city so many times I know when and where to site my easel to suit my mood, if I want total peace and quite then I have dozens of choices on the mainland and surrounding islands, whereas if I want to paint and sell from my portfolio then it off to the 'busy' areas. Either way I still get a real kick when people passing by stop to look, chat or even purchase.......pure magic!
