Interview with the artist
What is the first artwork you ever sold?
The first artwork I ever sold was a small painting of an African woman with her baby tied onto her back. I was about 17, and it was sitting in our living room. My great aunt came to stay, saw the painting, loved it...and payed what was to me a huge amount of money - I was thrilled!!
What is your favourite media and why?
I have mostly painted with acrylic paints, and they have to be my favourite - maybe from habit, but also because they are so versatile and they dry very quickly. I usually get paint smudged all over my arm while im painting, so this is a bonus for me!
Did a particular person or event spark your interest in art?
As long as I can remember I have always loved drawing - one of my earliest memories is of drawing people with their arms sticking straight out because I didnt know how to draw shoulders! Anyway, I really became passionate about painting in my final year of school when I was lucky enough to have an amazing art teacher, who encouraged me to find a style of painting that I could enjoy - that was the first year I took myself seriously as an artist!
How long does it usually take you to complete an artwork?
It all depends on whether I am enjoying painting it! If I dont have major setbacks, and I am on a roll I can finish one of my larger paintings in about 8 hours...but if I struggle or I am not inspired, it has taken up to 26 hours. I can't spend weeks painting the same thing as I get too fussy and overworked.
Do you have a favourite amongst your own artwork?
My favourite is usually the last one I have completed :-) Having said that, I have a special attachment to a painting I did in my final year of school of a still life (its in my gallery as an example) because I really found my style in that painting, and it marked the beginning of a new era!
Have any of your artworks ended up in unusual or famous places?
Not yet!
What media would you like to try out?
I would like to have the courage...and the funds to try out oils someday. I have never been able to afford it, and I think I am a little scared of them!
Have you ever had an art-related disaster?
My entire wardrobe is an art-related disaster.
Where do you work, do you have a studio?
I have taken over the front room of the house I am staying in (I have a very understanding housemate) and set up a studio - the floor is covered in a carpenter's dust sheet and the walls are covered in paper for me to scribble on...heaven
If you could pick just three colours to work with what would they be?
blue, white and yellow
