About My Art

I work almost exclusively in watercolour (though I occasionally work in gouache and often mix the two) and paint all types of subject matter, from people and flowers to landscapes and more illustrative pieces. I work by building up layers of colour, often lifting areas then applying more layers to achieve the effect I want.
I find inspiration in all sorts of places but mostly from the world around me, though often from the inner world of my imagination too. Artists who have influenced me include Edward Burne-Jones, Gustav Klimt, J.W.Waterhouse, David Hockney and Edmund Dulac.
I enjoy painting portraits and the challenge of capturing not just the likeness but something of the persons character in the work. This applies to animal portraits too, and also to flower and landscape paintings. Recent commissions have included portraits of children and pets and even one of a client's home. I usually work from my own photographs though if clients have a particular image they want me to use I am happy to do so. You can see more of my work on my official website.
