About My Art

I work mostly in watercolour as I find it a wonderful and exiting medium because of its slight unpredictability and the surprising effects that can be achieved, sometimes purely by accident.
I also love pastel and pencil and I have just started experimenting with acrylics which I found to be a most versatile medium for all kinds of subjects.
I am inspired by the natural world, be it a beautiful scenery, reflections in a still lake, atmospheric effects such as light and shade, rain after sun, a moody sky or the delicacy and pure colours of flowers.
For my landscapes I usually work from sketches I have made on the spot together with photographs as a reference and the memory of the feel and the colours of the place.
I also enjoy sketching and painting animals, usually in pastel, as it lends itself beautifully to render the texture of fur and as a cat owner and lover I have endless opportunity to study them in detail. I have also undertaken a number of commisions for cats and dogs working from photographs.
Over the last year I have attended Life drawing classes with a wonderful local artist and tutor John Black, sketching and painting nudes and greatly enjoying it. Hopefully I will soon feel confident enough about my figure work to display some of them in my gallery. So watch this space.
