Behind the pannier tank engine can be seen one of South Wales' greatest polluters. The phurnacite plant at Abercwmboi, near Aberdare, made smokeless fuel, but the process produced a cocktail of chemicals which polluted the surrounding environment. I remember it as a young boy churning out dense brown and yellow smoke, and on still days, the air would be thick with pollution. It closed down in the 1980's.
