Richard Picton
Artist's Biography

I was born in October 1963, in the South Wales industrial town of Aberdare, the last town in the valley, right at the very top end, beyond which is beautiful mountain scenery which carries on for miles and miles. I lived there until the age of 4, but continued to visit the area and still occasionally do. The whole area was saturated with industry and railways and this, along with mountain scenery, has been some of the main inspirations for my work. I lived in Neath for some years before moving to Reading, which is where I still live now, where I am employed by First Great Western as a railway mechanic.
Apart from painting, in my spare time I enjoy cycling along the Thames, Kennet and Avon canal, and also the South Oxfordshire countryside, always looking out for ideas for new paintings.
I also like to travel, especially by train, and have crossed Canada, Russia, China and Australia, as well as many trips from Britain into Eastern Europe. I much prefer it to flying as it gives you a better idea of the countryside you are travelling through.
