Portland Bill

About Portland Bill

On a journey back from Southend-on-Sea, I took the opportunity to visit some other parts of the country and photograph some places of interest. One of these was the Isle of Portland with its wonderful lighthouse.

The day was sunny but very windy. A half mile offshore a handful of fishing boats braved the wickedly wild tidal race for which the Bill is famous. They trolled through the race time and time again catching valuable sea bass feeding in the frenzied waters.

My image has captured the windswept bleakness of the Bill, where not a tree can grow. The painting includes the typical beach huts and two of the fishermen's boats which are hoisted in and out of the sea as required.

The red stripe of the lighthouse was a stark, vivid splash of colour. I wanted to keep its impact so painted this view as a grey monochrome. It is certainly very effective and despite the colour choice, the painting does not come across as sombre or dull.

This high quality giclee print is mounted and will fit a standard readymade frame. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing this image as a limited edition print (£110).
