Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a French painter who developed Cubism together with Pablo Picasso. Braque was initially influenced by Impressionism and later Fauvism before painting his earliest Cubist landscapes at L’Estaque and Guyon inspired by Cézanne. Braqué’s favourite subjects were still lifes. During the period of close collaboration with Picasso the two artists produced work which sometimes appeared identical. Braque used innovative techniques such as the inclusion of lettering, for example in ‘The Portuguese,’ mixing sand with paint and ‘papiers collés,’ paper pasted on canvases. After World War II, Braque painted independently in large flat planes instead of fragmented cubes. In his later years Braque produced sculpture and eight paintings of studio interiors.

Braque
Focusing on the French painter, Georges Braque (1882-1963), this is one of a series of illustrated monographs which offer introductions to modern art and artists. Each book presents a profile of the artist and analysis of his distinctive style. Braque was one of the artistic pioneers of the 20th century. Together with his friend Picasso, he is considered a founding father of Cubism, a term first used to describe the fragmented, cube-like forms found in many of his most innovative works. Some of Braque's more inventive techniques included mixing pigment with sand and metal filings, and creating compositions of pasted paper collage, known as "papiers colles". more information>>
