| Caravaggio (1573-1610) was an influencial Italian baroque painter whose nickname derives from his birthplace. Caravaggio created numerous altarpieces, some of which were condemned for depicting sacred personages as coarse peasants including ‘Death of the Virgin.’ Caravaggio is noted for dramatic use of light and shade and paintings such as ‘Supper at Emmaus’ were very influential. His violent temper led him to kill a man over a disputed tennis match in 1606 and Caravaggio spent his last years in exile. |
