| Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) was a French post Impressionist painter born in Aix-en-Provence. After studying law for two years he was encouraged by his childhood friend Emile Zola to settle in Paris. His view that nature should be painted in the forms of the cone, cube and cylinder and Cezanne’s distortion of perspective strongly influenced the development of Cubism. Living mainly in Provence, Cezanne painted portraits, still lifes, landscapes of Mont St Victoire and L’Estaque and a series of ‘Bathers.’ |
