Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Russian-born painter and printmaker of Jewish parentage. After studying in St Petersburg he visited Paris where he painted some of his best known works recalling Russian village life such as ‘Me and the Village.’ Chagall’s childlike figures and objects , distorted in scale and often floating upside down in space influenced the Surrealists. With Picasso he was the only painter to have an exhibition at the Louvre during his lifetime.
