| Gustave Courbet (1819-77) was a French painter who was born in Ornans. Courbet was self-taught, through copying paintings in the Louvre, he became leader of the school of realism. Courbet painted portraits, nudes, seascapes, hunting scenes and everyday life and his works include ‘Burial at Ornans’ and ‘Bonjour Monsieur Courbet.’ Courbet was a political radical who was imprisoned for his participation in the Commune of Paris in 1871. |
