| Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French painter and sculptor born in Paris. He trained in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Degas’ early works were portraits and history paintings. From the middle of the 1860s Degas began painting the subjects for which he is now famous, contemporary scenes especially the ballet and race courses. Degas was indebted to Japanese prints and to photography. The pastels of women at their toilet are regarded as the finest of Degas’ art but at the time shocked his contemporaries. |
