Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was a Flemish baroque painter who was born in Antwerp. Early in his career Van Dyck was assistant to Rubens who greatly influenced his work. After working in England for James I he visited Italy from 1621-27. In 1632 he returned to England as painter to Charles I. Van Dyck is best known for his portraits of the English court such as ‘Charles I on Horseback’ and ‘Thomas Killigrew and Lord Croft’ and he had a profound influence on the development of British portraiture.
