| El Greco (1541-1614) was born in Crete but worked mainly in Spain. The painter’s real name was Domenikos Theotokopoulos. EL Greco trained in Venice under Titian in the 1560s and greatly admired the work of Michelangelo which he saw during a visit to Rome. EL Greco sought the patronage of Philip II to whom he submitted ‘Martyrdom of St Maurice’ which the king rejected. El Greco’s early Spanish paintings such as the ‘Assumption of the Virgin’ were Venetian in inspiration. His masterpiece is ‘The Burial of Count Orgaz’ (1586-88) and hew also painted stormy landscapes and a number of portraits. |
