Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) was a Flemish painter who also served as diplomatic envoy of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. The controversial ‘Adoration of the Lamb’ altarpiece was probably begun by his elder brother Hubert and completed by Jan after Hubert’s death. Jan van Eyck is noted for his realistic portraits such as ‘The Arnolfini Marriage’ and ‘Man in a Red Turban.’ He perfected and possibly invented the Flemish technique of oil painting whereby the pigment is mixed with oil and turpentine and applied in thin glazes.
