| Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) was a German Romantic landscape painter who studied at the Copenhagen Academy from 1794-98. From 1798 Friedrich lived in Dresden and became friendly with Goethe and other writers. Friedrich’s first major painting was an altarpiece painted in 1808 initiated a controversy over the use of landscape in religious subjects. His works include ‘Wreck of the Hope.’ |
