Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) was a British portrait and landscape painter born in Sudbury in Suffolk. Gainsborough trained in London between 1740-46 and was introduced to rococo portraiture. In 1759 Gainsborough moved to Bath and studied the art of Van Dyck and painted ‘Countess Howe’ and the ‘Blue Boy.’ His landscapes were influenced by Ruisdael and Hobbema and later by Rubens, in such paintings as ‘Harvest Wagon.’ When Gainsborough returned to London in 1774 he successfully rivalled Sir Joshua Reynolds for commissions and royal favour. Gainsborough was a founder member of the Royal Academy.
