Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a French post Impressionist painter who was born in Paris. After five years at sea Gauguin became a stockbroker and only painted as a hobby. Gauguin’s early works were influenced by the Impressionists and he exhibited with them between 1881-86. In 1883 Gauguin became a full-time artist and he moved to Brittany in 1886 where he developed a style known as synthetism with paintings such as ‘Vision after the Sermon.’ Gauguin visited Martinique in 1887 and stayed with Vincent Van Gogh in Arles in 1888 and later moved to Tahiti in 1891.
