| Giotto di Bondone (c.1266-1337) was an Italian painter and architect who laid the foundation for Renaissance painting. The fresco cycle of St Francis in the upper church of S Francesco, Assisi, is believed to be one of Giotto’s early works. Giotto also painted frescoes in the Arena Chapel, Padua and in Sta Croce, Florence. In 1334 Giotto became architect of the city and surveyor of Florence Cathedral, for which he designed the campanile. |
