| William Hogarth (1697-1764) was a British painter and engraver who studied under a silverplate engraver and later under Sir James Thornhill, whose daughter he married. William Hogarth established his reputation with the paintings and engravings of ‘A Harlot’s Progress’ (1731-32). Hogarth moralized social satires in narrative series with ‘A Rake’s Progress,’ ‘Industry and Idleness,’ ‘Gin Lane’ and the paintings of ‘Marriage ŕ la Mode.’ Hogarth campaigned for an Engraving Copyright Act, the so-called Hogarth’s Act 1734 and wrote ‘The Analysis of Beauty’ in 1753 expressing his artistic theories. |
