| Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese painter and book illustrator. Hokusai was the most famous ukiyo-e designer of colour prints and he began as a wood engraver and was a pupil of the painter and printmaker Shunsho. Hokusai is best known for his later landscapes which influenced the Impressionists and post Impressionists. Hokusai’s most famous works include ‘Views of Mount Fuji’ (1835) and his collection of sketchbooks, the ‘Hokusai Manga’ published from 1814 onwards. |
