| Hans Holbein the Younger (c.1497-1543) was a German painter who was born in Augsburg. In 1515 Holbein settled in Basle where designed woodcuts for ‘Dance of Death.’ Through his friend Erasmus Holbein obtained the patronage of Sir Thomas More in England and he settled there in 1532 and became court painter and designer to Henry VIII. Holbein’s portrait of Henry VIII in a wall painting for Whitehall Palace became the prototype for other paintings of the king. Holbein was also commissioned to paint Henry VIII’s prospective wives ‘Christina, Duchess of Milan’ and ‘Anne of Cleves.’ Holbein’s most famous work is ‘The Ambassadors’ which is in the National Gallery in London. |
