| Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was a French painter who was born in Montauban. Ingres became a pupil of David in Paris in 1797 and his three paintings of the Rivière family established Ingres as a skilled portrait painter. From 1806 to 1820 Ingres lived in Rome and in 1824 returned to Paris where he was an opponent of Romanticism. After teaching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Ingres returned to Rome as the director of the French Academy. Ingres is noted for his nudes such as ‘Valpinçon Bather.’ |
