| Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was a Russian expressionist painter and art theorist who was born in Moscow where he graduated in law. In 1896 Kandinsky moved to study in Munich and painted the first purely abstract pictures in European art in around 1911. Kandinsky drew analogies between his art and music in his book ‘Concerning the Spiritual in Art’ of 1911. Kandinsky was a founder of the Neve Künstlervereinigung (1909) or New Artists’ Association and Der Blaue Reiter (1911) The Blue Rider. Following a stay in Russia, Kandinsky taught at the Bauhaus school and his style became more geometrical. |
