| Paul Klee (1879-1940) was a Swiss painter and etcher born in Berne. After training in the Munich Academy, Klee worked initially as an etcher influenced by Beardsley and Goya. Klee returned to Germany in 1906 and became associated with Der Blaue Reiter and taught at the Bauhaus school of design. Klee turned to painting after an inspirational visit to Tunisia in 1914 and after 1919 used oils incorporating signs and hieroglyphs to create a fantasy world infuenced by children’s art. |
