| Edouard Manet (1832-83) was a French painter who was born in Paris and trained under the classical painter Thomas Couture between 1850 and 1856. By 1860 Manet was painting contemporary scenes however his art is indebted to the Old Masters such as Velázquez and Hals. Manet exhibited mainly at the Paris salon with works including ‘Olympia’ and ‘Déjeuner Sur l’herbe’ which received much criticism and derision. Manet’s friend Emile Zola defended the artist’s work in an article published in 1867. In the 1870s Manet adopted the Impressionist style but he refused to exhibit with them. His paintings include ‘The Balcony,’ ‘The Luncheon’ and ‘A Bar at the Folies-Bergère.’ |
