| Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French painter and sculptor who abandoned his legal studies to become a pupil of Gustave Moreau in the 1890s. Matisse initiated fauvism in the early 1900s with boldly patterned and vibrantly coloured still lifes, portraits and nudes such as the controversial ‘Woman With the Hat’ of 1905. Matisse was the only artist to continue fauvism principles after the development of Cubism and Matisse was also inspired by Islamic art. By 1909 he had achieved worldwide recognition. |
