| Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet born at Caprese in Tuscany. Michelangelo trained in Florence under the painter Ghirlandaio and in the school in the Medici gardens under the patronage of Lorenzo de Medici. Michelangelo worked in Rome from 1496 to 1501 and produced his first major sculptures such as the ‘Pietà.’ His works in Florence between 1501-05 include ‘David.’ The painting of the ‘Holy Family’ and the cartoon of the ‘Battle of Cascina.’ The celebrated Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508-12) in the Vatican established Michelangelo as the greatest painter of his time. When Michelangelo returned to Florence he became the architect and sculptor of the Medici funerary chapel in S Lorenzo, designed the Laurentian Library, created the fresco of the ‘Last Judgement’ for the Sistine Chapel which were his first major works in the new mannerist style. In his last years Michelangelo worked mainly as an architect and in 1547 became the chief architect of St Peter’s, Rome and designed its great dome. |
