| Jean François Millet (1814-75) was a French painter of peasant origin who studied under Delaroche. Millet achieved acclaim in 1844 although later his art was criticized for expressing socialist ideas. Millet settled in Barbizon in 1849 and became associated with the Barbizon school. He painted melancholy and sometimes sentimental agricultural scenes such as ‘The Gleaners’ and ‘The Angelus.’ |
