Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French Impressionist painter who was born in Paris. Monet spent his childhood in Le Havre where his teacher Boudin encouraged him to paint in the open air. After military school service in Algeria, Monet met Sisley and Renoir in Gleyre’s studio. Initially influenced by the Barbizon school in the late 1860s Monet developed the Impressionist technique in views of Paris and in the 1870s in boating scenes at Argenteuil. Monet created series of the same scenes painted at different times of the day including ‘Gare St Lazare,’ ‘Haystacks,’ ‘Rouen Cathedral’ and the ‘Poplars,’ Monet’s last works were his famous murals of water lilies.
