Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was a Norwegian painter and printmaker who was a major influence on 20th Century German expressionism. Largely self-taught Munch developed his mature style in Berlin following visits to Paris where he was influenced by Gauguin and Van Gogh. Munch’s symbolic paintings of love, death and despair including the famous ‘Cry’ reflect the pessimism caused by family tragedy.
