| Georges Seurat (1859-91) was a French painter who is famous for developing neoimpressionism or pointillism. Seurat was influenced by writings on aesthetics and the colour theories of Delacroix and the chemist Michel-Eugène Chevreul. He based his dots of pure colour and static composition on scientific study. Seurat only finished seven paintings in the pointillist style including ‘Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte (1884-86) and ‘Le Cirque’ (1890-91). |
